Comment on The Schuster Post "TV's"

I agree with Joey when he says that “people watch more and more TV and have consume their lives”. I usually don’t watch a lot of TV, but I see this happen almost every day with people I know. For example: my brother comes home from school, and if our parents do not tell him specifically to do his homework, or to go outside, he will sit up in his room and watch TV until it is time for bed. He will just sit there, totally mesmerized by the blinding light and the moving pictures on the screen. Honestly to me, it is kind of sad.

Comment on Jdizzy's Info Blog 101 "Radio Response Lecture"

I think it is interesting how Jediah said “the time for radio has come and gone, its mark on the world will last quite a while”. Of course radio is not at its prime, and is slowly going downhill, but I do not think radio will ever fully become extinct. With all of the new technology today, such as Pandora, Itunes radio, Apple radio, etc… radio will not become extinct. Radio is of course not the same as it used to be, and some people may say that it’s going downhill, but I think that there is only more to come with radio.

WDRB local news critique #2

After following WDRB for the past 9 days it is clear to me that they don’t report a lot of international or even national news. I understand that WDRB is a local news station, but it would be nice to see more than 1 or 2 stories that aren’t stupid little 3 minute stories about the next mugging in downtown Louisville. I understand that people need to be recognized when they are shot in downtown Louisville for no apparent reason, but I don’t really think that WDRB needs to spend 4 minutes discussing the exact information of the killing. It’s all the same and it is not newsworthy. There are wars going on all over the world and WDRB’s viewers are unaware because they only cover about 1 non-newsworthy international story a week. WDRB is a little better about national stories, but not much. They only report on about 3 national stories a week and some of those aren’t newsworthy either. WDRB is lacking in story diversity and I think they need to step up their game!

Response to "Recorded Music" lecture

Recently we had a lecture on recorded music. I enjoyed this lecture because we learned how much people cared about music, and how to make music before technology was invented. Now that we have technology, people can basically get music whenever and wherever they want. In all of my 15 years of living I can’t recall a time when recorded music wasn’t abundant. I cannot imagine a time without recorded music. I think people in this generation have taken recorded music for granted. Today most of the pop songs out are mostly made off of computers. The music in the songs is not original and a lot of it isn’t even real music, and honestly it is kind of frustrating. Most artists today don’t even write their own music and when they come in concert, most of the music is pre-recorded. Music used to be something that was valued by people; it was something that was only played during special events, and things of importance. Now music is everywhere. It has been around since the beginning of time and will most likely be around for the end. Music has come a long way since it was first created, and will only continue to flourish.

Comment on The New Piper Times "Radio"

After reading Piper’s post on radio, I was very impressed at the fact that she was eager to actually listen to the KDKA radio station. Piper’s curiosity got the best of me and I figured that I should listen to the KDKA radio station as well. After listening to KDKA for a few minute, I was in shock that a radio station that started broadcasting more than 50 years ago was still in full effect. Even though KDKA had developed a lot since the 20’s, it was still very basic. I am glad that Piper took the initiative to listen to KDKA, because if she hadn’t I would have never listened to it myself.

Comment on The Simmons File "Response VI- Movies"

I think Thomas made a very valid point when he said “I knew that movies were dying, but not as much as we think they are”.  I don't agree that movies are dying, because modern technology allows anyone to become a film maker, and with all of the social media such as YouTube, anyone can become a movie star/film maker. In my opinion movies will only continue to grow.

I agree with Thomas when he said that "movies shaped a new economy for the future of the world". If movies had never been invented, the world would not be anything close to what it is today. Movie prices continue to increase because the cost of the production of the movie is increasing, and people will continue to spend money on movies. If movies hadn't been invented thousands of people would have different jobs such as actors, directors, screen writers, and even movie theater workers. People spend millions of dollars a year going to the movies, simply for the escape of their every day lives. People just want to experience a different reality for a couple of hours. I think that movies have influenced our society for the better and I couldn't imagine a world without them.

Response to "Television" lecture

Recently we had a lecture on the history of television, and how it has impacted society. It was very interesting to hear how television has grown from when it was first invented. We learned that in 1936, there were only 200 televisions that had been made, and I think it is fascinating that by 1977, 97% of houses had televisions in them. Now toward the end of 2015, it is rare to find a home that doesn't contain at least 1 television. It is even common for new homes to have televisions built into their bathrooms.

I learned that television has impacted our society in plenty of different ways. One way that society has been impacted by television is how it has influenced the way we spend money. Television is full of commercials and advertisements. Commercials usually make the product that is being advertised look as enticing as possible, so that when people see these commercials, it captures their attention and makes them think that they must have the product.

Another way that television has made an impact on our society is by influencing the ways that we act, dress, think, and and eat. If you see a celebrity wearing a certain brand or style, it might make you want to dress like them. Sometimes if you see a celebrity even eating something, it might make you want to give it a try. The television programs of today have shown younger kids that it is acceptable to be disrespectful.

I think Mr. Miller did a good and thorough job on this lecture. I was surprised to see how television has impacted MY life in so many ways that I had not acknowledged before. The examples that were used, helped me to visualize the effect that television has had on us.

WDRB local news critique

WDRB has a tendency to report about a lot of social issues, human interests, and crime. The reason for this is because social issues, human interests, and crime is interesting to the viewer. It is shocking to see that there aren’t more stories about politics and government considering that the election is quickly approaching.

WDRB’s article and video “Undercover investigation: Dangerous synthetic drugs sold to teens Louisville shops” was very in depth. Stories like this can show the audience how dangerous these drugs are and how that impacts our city. The synthetic drug “Cloud 9” has become a big problem for teens today and can be very harmful for your body. Other names for the drugs include “Bizarro”, and “Mr. Nice Guy”. Some of the other names could make the drugs sound more appealing and less dangerous.

In situations involving drugs, parents are quick to defend their children. One mother says, “He never saw the bottle, they had just put it onto his tongue,” on behalf of her son. She claims, “it happened very quickly. He had an immediate reaction. His heart rate dropped, his oxygen levels dropped – he could have died”. These synthetic drugs can be harmful to your body, no matter how much is consumed.

Though a lot of WDRB’s stories are good quality, newsworthy stories, most of them are not. The stories are not considered newsworthy because the only point in reporting them is because they are interesting. WDRB needs to focus on making the important interesting, and not making the interesting important.

Media Critique

Kim Davis is a catholic Rowan County clerk, who refused to issue a homosexual couple a marriage, just because homosexuality is against her religious beliefs. Kim was harassed by the media and other homosexual couples, and eventually was sent to jail for disobeying the law, but was let out shortly after a few political figures came to protest for her release. Kim Davis now is forced to issue marriage license to all people whether they are straight or homosexual.

I think that Joseph's explanation of newspaper lifespan is very good. I like how Joey goes into depth about how newspaper have evolved so much since they were created and how you can simply type in a few words on the Internet and get several articles about the news you were looking for. I also like how Joey describes how the future of electronics are up and coming and newspapers are dying. His explanation was very interesting and informative.

I think Luke thoroughly explained the lecture on media critiques. All of the information that was stated in Luke's post was very valid and helped me to grasp a better understanding of media critiques.

Mass communication

Mass communication is a message that must travel a distance through space or time. For something to be considered mass communication, it must also receive no immediate feedback, and have a potential to reach a mass audience. If there is no message, then it is not mass communication.

Ways that communication can be interrupted are through a filter (something that is preventing you from decoding the message), environmental noise (something that is outside of your control that is preventing decoding and internalization), informational filter (something that you are unable to internalize about the message), and psychological filter (something that you choose not to internalize and decode).

Some forms of noise may include channel noise (environmental interference such as a storm), environmental noise (prevents from decoding such as a loud  train), or semantic noise (when something goes wrong while encoding such as a person yelling while you are trying to hear another person).

I think that these are valid points to describe how mass communication works and how people can prevent mass communication. The 5 steps of communication were very helpful in teaching me to understand mass communication as well. The 5 steps of communication are: the stimulus, encoding, transmission, decoding and internalization.

John Peter Zenger

John Peter Zenger's case was probably one of the most important cases of all time, because now truth is the only defense against libel. Zenger's helped journalists all around the world for centuries with his case, but if he had never published any libel, and been sued I can't even begin to imagine how different the world would be. John Peter Zenger's case is even still relevant today. People can publish anything they want about the government as long as it is true. Many people have suffered because of John Peter Zenger, but many have benefitted as well. I think that he will be known for many more centuries to come and I think that his work will continue to benefit others in the future.

Gutenberg

I think that the printing press is an amazing invention but it is irrelevant today because with modern technology, the majority of people read on electronic devices. I think that electronics are easier to use than books because if you are reading and come across a word that you don't know or find a sentence that you don't understand, you can simply just look it up on the device. Most programs make it to where if you touch a word, it will tell you the definition. I think that our generation is very fortunate to have all of the nice technology that is out and if we don't put it to use, then there is no point in having it.

Newspaper

personally think that newspapers are out dated because of all of the new technology that is out, but newspapers are condsidered "traditional" because they have been around since 59 BC. Newspapers were all they had in the generation before cell phones and all of the new technology. I think that it is easier to just read the news off of a phone, ipad, computer or television instead of buying a newspaper. Some people would  rather buy a newspaper because newspapers are low tech, and the person might not like the modern technology. Another reason why people might like newspapers is because they are a physical object, and they are shareable. With the electronic format you wouldn't be able to lend your phone to someone so that they could read the news, so I think that newspapers are beneficial in that way. Newspapers are also very cheap and affordable so people who don't have enough money for modern technology can still know what's happening in the world. The way that people get their news has definitely evolved since it first started, but now there are so many other ways to recieve the news.
